I have been writing essays for almost one year, and I have written only four essays in English. But I have studied English for over 20 years. It is important for me to write articles in English. It is a dream that anyone who loves studying English hopes to achieve someday in his or her lifetime.

Writing essays in English is not a big deal for Americans or English people, but it is totally different for Koreans who have overcome the difficulties of studying English in Korea and understand the value of achieving English speaking and writing ability.

So it is kind of a duty for those who teach students in school to show them how to write, read, and understand English. It is also like a passport that allows us to move beyond the past and obtain the ability to read English books and write English articles.

Normally, we Koreans start studying English in elementary school, but people over their 50s started their studies in middle school, and for many of them, it was the beginning of dark memories with English. We memorized 100 words every day. The accents of teachers in those days were poor, as they had studied English during the era of colonial education.

We took tests every day, and teachers even beat us based on our test scores. Every day. We even made word cards by ourselves. On crowded buses, we memorized words for exams without learning proper pronunciation. It created a wall that felt impossible to overcome.

One month ago, an article in The New York Times pointed out that the English section of the Korean entrance exam contains passages that are not suitable for students to fully understand in order to get the correct answers.

Anyway, I have now begun the start of my long journey to enjoy my English and to improve my life through English.
